I composed the 7 Dances for Viola and Piano during the years that my daughter Sarah was taking viola lessons, in which I sometimes accompanied her on piano. Because there is comparatively little original music for viola I decided to write some intermediate-level pieces (as "gebrauchmusik") that express the viola's inherent tonal qualities. The pieces are easily learned, fun to play, and have technical challenges of pedagogical value. They are written as dances to appeal to a child's natural attraction to, and understanding of, rhythm, the optimal place from which to begin exploring and mastering the complexities of music in general. This contribution to the viola repertoire is my way of honoring the instrument that gave me and my daughter so much joy as we played music together. We both hope that others will have the same experience. (James A. Dugger)
