  • August 25, 2007 Really great

I love the Rococo Variations and this edition is great, the introductory text is interesting, it's not just a résumé of the history of this piece, it's a real introduction to understand the piece, which is, I think, the most important thing when playing a piece of...

music. The music is clearly printed. Of course, players will have to be intermediate:advanced but even though it may be difficult, it is really worth trying, for the variations are incredibly beautiful. I don't understand why so many people think the preceding review isn't helpful. After all, he or she is talking about the piano accompaniment which is quite important in the execution of this piece of music ! Let me remind you that the Rococo Variations were composed for cello AND orchestra !

  • July 09, 2007 BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!

I SIMPLY LOVE IT!!!!!! The magic of Tchaikovsky's music is here again!!!! The music is so beautiful!! I played the piano part and my friend played the cello part so I can't say if the cello part was difficult or not, but the piano part was intermediate/advanced...

. A great arrangement of the orchestral score. A very interesting introductory text. And it's Urtext! (which is great too because you have the REAL score with the two versions, the one of Tchaikovsky and the one of Fitzenhagen). A great edition.

  • June 21, 2006 Tschaikowsky for 'cello...to the MAX

A staple in the violoncello repertory!! Very difficult. For the advanced player. Musicians have borrowed the archetectural term "rococo" and have used it sparingly for those composers who have one foot in the Baroque and the other in the Classical periods (c. 1750). Tschaikowsky, a late Romantic composer, (d. 1893...

) uses a theme here which characterizes the rococo: a style rather than an era in music which exhibits a lightly decorated yet elegantly poised melodiousness. The variations become more and more decorated as the piece progresses and you guessed it: VERY Difficult w/high notes, double stops, pizzicati, runs, and bowing tricks!! A piece worth working towards and not too often performed these days.
