Baldwin was born around 1560 and died in London in 1615. Harmonically and tonally Baldwins pieces are at time quite eccentric, at one archaic and adventurous: he is not at all concerned, for instance, about ending in the tonality in which he began. The Browning (a.k.a. The Leaves Be Green) setting is unusual in its tonal shifts, with the tune appearing on different degees of the scale, also starting on different beats of the bar.

About English Instrumental Music

c. 1600. Some of the English music of this period is suitable only for viols but there's plenty written in a style that makes sense on all kinds of instruments. That is what is produced in this series. Available as score and parts.
