Chamber Ensemble
Score and Parts. Composed by Gyorgy Ligeti (1923-2006) and Gy. Schott. Score and Parts. 142 pages. Schott Music #ED7744. Published by Schott Music (HL.49007493).

Item Number: HL.49007493

This work, regarded as a homage to Brahms, has a key position within Ligeti's oeuvre. It is especially notable for the pithy way in which the memorable thematic material is shaped into precisely defined formal

structures.

The Trio starts with a quote from Beethoven's Sonata 'Les Adieux', though Ligeti, typically, puts his own slant onto the famous horn fifths. This edition in normal music setting complements the facsimile edition of the work. Violin, French Horn, and Piano.

I compare the copy I received with my school library's copy (which I have been using it to learn the music for more than a month). Both are from Schott, same cover and layout, same good quality of printing. But the one that I received apparently is a newer...

print because all the printing errors (wrong notes, missing accidentals) appeared in the older version are gone. I'm happy with my purchase.

This is a beautiful score, and a very challenging part of the horn repertoire. The score and parts are clearly presented, and the paper and printing quality is top class. There is a separate page listing errata for the piano part, which should be able to be incorporated with little...

difficulty once translated from the German.

I first heard this music in a concert with a friend. She hated it viscerally and several years on she still shudders if I so much as mention the word 'Ligeti'. I was... intrigued and extremely impressed by the playing, but I had to buy a recording and listen to...

it a few times before I started to enjoy the piece. I'm a decent amateur, but I'm sceptical as to whether I will ever be able to play it. It goes to high e-flat, and is rhythmically complex. There are a number of 'special effects' such as harmonic series played with different valve settings. The piece calls for great delicacy, and although I own higher and faster music, this is probably the most demanding piece that I own. This edition is very nicely printed on high quality paper. Despite the use of 3-page pullouts, a page-turner or three would probably still be required for a performance. The piano part seems to have a lot of mistakes, judging by the errata sheet included.
