Ewazen’s substantial Trio for Trumpet, Violoncello, and Piano was composed for Croatian trumpeter Tomislav Spoljar and his Velika Gorica Brass Festival. The trio has been recorded for Albany Records by Chris Gekker on trumpet and Michelle Djokic on cello, with the composer at the piano. Ewazen weaves the sonorities of brass, string, and piano, to create a three-player "mini -chamber orchestra". The boldly rhythmic first movement, lyrical second movement, and concluding gigue-with-fugue third movement blend the greatly contrasting trumpet and cell to create a rich spectrum of intimate-yet symphonic beauty. TRIO FOR TRUMPET, VIOLINCELLO, AND PIANO was written for and dedicated to Tomislav Spoljar, a marvelous trumpet player and friend from Zagreb, Croatia, who has long been a champion of my music, and is also the director of the distinguished Velika Gorica Brass Festival, held every spring in the town of Velika Gorica, Croatia.The work was premiered at this festival on May 25, 2007 with Guillaume Couloumy on trumpet, Adam Chelfi on cello, and Mia Elezovic on piano. It was subsequently recorded by Chris Gekker on trumpet, Michelle Djokic on cello, and the composer at the piano. The NY premiere was given by Tomislav Spoljar on trumpet, Justina Sullivan on cello, and Ivan Pernicki on piano. The composer is grateful to these exceptional performers for the earliest performances of the piece.I had long been interested in writing a trio featuring trumpet, cello, and piano, having already written one for trumpet, violin, and piano. With all the wonderful mixed chamber works for woodwinds and strings, I had felt that brass players also needed and deserved chamber pieces in this combination. By combining a brass instrument and a string instrument with piano, the resulting sound can almost be like a mini-chamber orchestra — the colors are so vivid and varied. Hence the creation of this trio.The work is in three movements. The first has a bold, rhythmic momentum in the piano underlying insistent, assertive melodies in the trumpet and cello. Primarily in minor modes, the movement is bold and strong. The second movement demonstrates how the trumpet can be effective at playing long, lyrical lines in tandem with the cello, alternating poignant melodies over a lush, arpeggiated accompaniment. The final movement is a bright, lively, playful gigue, with a rhythmically contrasting, energetic fugue at its core. Following the minor key of the first movement and the lyricism of the second, the final movement is a joyful, spirited finale, bringing the piece to a celebratory conclusion.
