    Hong Kong
    Difficulty Level:
  • September 25, 2008 Perfect for Baritone

'Trade Winds' is something of a period piece but it has never lost its charm. It sits beautifully in the baritone tessitura and allows the singer a great deal of expression. I sang it first over 25 years ago and it is still a great favourite.

  • June 12, 2007 John Masefield's Sea Song

John Masefield's knowledge and love of the sea is apparent in his "Salt Water Ballads" One of these, "Trade Winds", was set to music by a contemporary, Frederick Keel, a professor at the Royal Academy of Music. The setting compliments admirably Masefield's gentle word picture of of a...

tropical harbor. The rocking accompaniment at the start of each verse nicely mirrors the light swell in the harbor. The change from 3/4 to 4/4 time heightens the pleasure and relief provided by the steady breeze. The annoyance at the fiddle is well contrasted with the agreeable "soughing in the sail" of the wind. The variation of time in the last verse allows the listener to appreciate the continuous nature of Trade Winds. Finally the dancing fireflies are beautifully caught by the piano accompaniment. In all a sensitive treatment of an understated theme, avoiding the pitfall of overdramatising its content; enhancing the picture without unwanted highlighting.

    Difficulty Level:
  • January 14, 2005 Not Hard, But Requires Work

I am performing this piece at contest. The music is not hard to learn and repeats with each verse. There are, however, a few technical things to watch out for. Breathing is a big deal and the proper dynamics can really sell it. With a little effort you can perform...
