The fifth grade students at my school are performing this play. I chose fifth graders because the students read Tom Sawyer in this grade. The students LOVE the music and when we performed it for the rest of the elementary students they enjoyed it immensely. This is a great show...

to do with students who are just beginning part singing. Extra Extra worked really well with the students saying the canon before trying to sing it in canon.

The songs are easily singable within a range for elementary singers. Two of my classes are in the midst of learning them; speaking parts have yet to be assigned. Students are anxious to perform!

  • June 27, 2007 My school performed this play

My elementary school (grades K-8) performed this play when I was in the 6th grade. What was great about this play was that the songs weren't too hard for the Kindgergarteners, but the plot wasn't boring for the upper grades. I played the part of Aunt Polly...

and I LOVED that I got to say the first words in the entire show- I still remember them: "Tom? Tom?! TOM SAWYER!!! Where is that boy?" Out of all the plays I've been in, this is the only one that I can still sing every word to every song. The reason is because the songs are catchy and easy to pick up. (I sing "To A Brighter Day" to my baby nephew when I put him sleep) I think that the best thing about this play was that when I had to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in high school, it gave me an enthusiasim about the book that the other kids didn't have. Thank you for all the wonderful memories of performing this play. I loved every minute of it! -Tressa, age 18
