Composed by Manuel de Falla. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. 20th Century,World. 97 pages. Philip Le Bas #3142469. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.818152).

De Falla’s Suite from the ballet of "Three-Cornered Hat" is the most quintessentially Spanish of all orchestral dances, demanding a full orchestra (plus singer.) Here is a small "mini-suite" of movements arranged for wind quintet, with a major role played by a cor anglais in place of the oboe in most movements. Performing it is not for the faint-hearted, but it is published for those who would like to get a flavour of De Falla’s masterpiece with fewer instruments. It is certainly rewarding to play and listen to, and for players it should help to develop rapid tonguing techniques! All the major characters of the ballet are represented in the movements chosen, including, briefly, the pompous town mayor in the third movement:

1. The Neighbour’s Dance (Seguidillas)

2. The Miller’s Dance (Farruca)

3. Afternoon (La Tarde)

4. The Dance of the Miller’s Wife (Fandango)
