    Difficulty Level:
  • July 24, 2004 A Gentle Treatment

This is not a rollicking, foot stomping arrangement nor is it the kid's Sunday School approach. Instead, Moses Hogan provides a slower, gentler treatment with lush harmonies (often with slight chromatic dissonance). Simple and beautiful solos (for soprano and tenor) are supported by choral "oooing" through much of the...

piece. The concluding section calls for at least 8 voices, although there is enough doubling of notes in the chords to allow performance with slightly fewer strong voices. One of the final chords asks the first soprano to hit a high B flat; choral directors might opt for a reconfiguration of voices on that particular chord unless you've got the horsepower in your soprano section. If performed well, the overall effect should (I think) be serene and transcendent without completely abandoning the gospel chords at the root of this classic. A wonderful arrangement for singers and listeners alike.
