    Difficulty Level:
  • July 09, 2012 Great Choice for Affordability

This is a reprint of the Bischoff edition. Bischoff is known for his expertise in the music of Bach, and this edition reflects that expertise. His notes are extremely helpful for students, and they are consistent with principles of Baroque interpretation. While not a true urtext, this edition is the...

next best thing. It makes a great choice for students who cannot afford high priced editions targeted for musicologists. The print on these older editions is smaller than that of the expensive editions, which might be a factor for some students. But the quality of the editing is just as good as that of Henle, Barenreiter, or Peters, and the cost is about a third of the others. If a student can afford a more expensive edition, I recommend the Barenreiter or the Henle. But I can ask a parent to purchase this in clear conscience!

This edition of the WTC Vol. 1 is difficult to read and has a cheap binding. The pages look like reduced photocopies. I had an old Kalmus edition (30 yrs ago) that I have been unable to find so ordered this as a replacement--it's not!
