The Voyage’s musical journey begins with a lush and contemporary-sounding opening, and then moves on to a more lilting main theme. You will especially like the swift changes between 4/4 and 3/4 time throughout the piece, as well as its long lines and exhuberant harmonies. Take this voyage with your orchestra. It is well worth the trip.
The Voyage is influenced by the composer’s love of the sci-fi and fantasy movies of the eighties and early nineties. In both of these genres, a long voyage from one place to another usually sets the stage for all of the events that occur. These epic voyages can contain a range of dramatic events, from triumphant to tragic. The introduction of the piece should be ethereal and mysterious, representing the destination in the minds of those embarking on the journey. Make sure that all of the notes in the clusters at mm. 2 and 4 are given equal weight. This section contains various accidentals in the lower voices and can provide an opportunity to teach different enharmonic spellings (C≤ = BΩ, etc.).The journey begins at m. 11 with the A section. Be sure to keep the melodic material light so that there is plenty of forward momentum leading into the B section at m. 23. After another slightly varied statement of both the A and B sections, the C section occurs at m. 53. Make sure that the forte-piano chord in m. 61 drops low enough to allow the melody to speak. The introductory material returns at m. 72, now in a more strident presentation as the destination has beenreached. This is followed by a dramatic coda which brings the piece to a close.
