Big band - Medium Difficult

SKU: JL.JLP-7249

Arranged by Shorty Rogers. Swing, Jazz. Score and parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-7249).

Shorty Rogers arranged this jazz version of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker in 1960. This recording session took place in Los Angeles in May 1960 - at the same time and city that Ellington was recording Strayhorn's version of the Nutcracker. In fact, one session was held on the exact same day that Ellington was also recording it in Los Angeles: May 26.

Shorty arranged much of this to feature himself on trumpet (trumpet 2) as well as trombone, tenor sax, and piano solos. In addition, the instrumentation featured 4 tenor saxophones and bass saxophone. Optional alternate parts have been included so that this may be played by a standard big band.

The sound sample provided is the complete overture which features parts of most of the movements and will give you a good feel for the work. Movements: Like Nutty Overture; Nutty Marche; Blue Reeds; Swingin' Plum Fairy; Snowball; Six Pack; Flowers for the Cats; Dance Expresso; Pass the Duke; China Where?; Overture for Shorty.

Instrumentation: Full Score, 4 Tenor Saxophones (or 2 Alto Sax and 2 Tenor Sax), Bass Saxophone/Baritone Saxophone, 4 Trumpets, 3 Trombones, Bass Trombone, Piano, Bass, Drums.
