With Scripture: Isaiah 3. Sacred, Choral. octavo inches.

A sequence of sacred choruses on texts from the prophet Isaiah. One of the finest 20th-century works for unaccompanied chorus. Pulitzer prize-winner, Douglas Moore (at the time chairman of Columbia U. Music Dept.) wrote to Thompson in 1936: "...I want to go on record as believing that you have written the best modern choral work I have heard. It is good from every point of view. Technical treatment of the voices, understanding and expression of the text, and actual musical content which is fresh and beautiful." The individual movements are also published separately.

I. Say ye to the righteous
II. Woe unto them
III. The noise of a multitude
IV. Howl ye
V. The paper reeds by the brooks
VI. Recit. But these are they that forsake the Lord For ye shall go out with joy
VII. Have ye not known?
VIII. Ye shall have a song.

  • June 27, 2011 Peaceable kingdom will always be in my heart.

This composition was presented to my singing group in college, it added something in my life that i didnt expect. I loved music, but not this kind of music! I was young and rebellious and love soul music and gospel and this didnt fit my taste, but as i learned...

each piece the harmonies and the movement of the songs moved me. To this day, some 30 years later, i can still sing most without pausing and it still moves my soul.

  • April 24, 2006 Moving and beautiful

One of my favorite choral memories is singing this with a group of ten singers in Canterbury Cathedral when I was 19. It was difficult with ten, one or two on a part, but that only elevated the experience for us. Intense music, intense prophetic text.

  • January 21, 2006 Fantastic! Very moving piece of music

I performed this piece with about 100 of the best high school chorus students from around Northeeastern MA in 1992, for the Northeastern District Choir. It was a demanding piece but very moving and powerful. I have the tape of our performance at home and am still moved each time...

I listen to it and sing with it. "Howl Ye" and "The Paper Reeds" are my two favorites from this piece. It is definitely a challenge, but worth the hard work!

  • September 25, 2004 memories of a lifetime

I sang (1st soprano) this composition in my high school choir. Almost 25 years later, I can still remember the intensity and the emotion that this collection evokes - in both its singers and its audience. A truly inspiring and emotional piece. I will treasure it always! Not an easy piece...

, but well worth the effort it demands!

I sang the entire composition "The Peaceable Kingdom" in college. I saw at performances of these peices persons heart melt and their emotions take complete hold of them. The Peaceable Kingdom is a bible study on the end of the world which will cause you to considered your own fate...

. I sang second tenor, we were divided into 2 choirs (1st SATB) and 2nd SATB), required for several of the peices where the music depicts conflict and fueding. We memorized the entire compostion and sang it a capella. That was in 1980, I remember every peice and it's interpretation today. I have it recorded from when the choir sang it on tour in England. Excellent!!
