The Legend of Castle Armagh

The Legend of Castle Armagh composed by Paul Murtha. For Concert Band (Score & Parts). MusicWorks Grade 1. Grade 1.5. Score and parts. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.4002428).

Commissioned by the Cabarrus All-County Middle School Band (Concord, North Carolina), this work was inspired by the composer's Irish heritage and the rich history of Ireland. With three main themes, this programmatic work opens with a peaceful sunrise with mist rising from the bog. The second theme describes the great hall of a majestic medieval castle, complete with vibrant colors and pageantry. The exciting “battle” theme follows and ultimately resolves to a return of the earlier themes. A wonderfully effective setting for beginning players! Dur: 3:10 (Includes Full Performance CD).

I thought the piece was incredible for the flutes and clarinets, but no doubt, my favorite part is the trumpet section. My favorite part is everything after measure 29. Beautiful. The drum part is amazing.

This piece is melodic and absolutely stunning to listen to. The first time I heard it it almost made me cry...It's just so calm and beautiful. Ah, also the beginning reminds me of Legend of Zelda.

Awesome! It's a really pretty piece. The dynamics make it really fun to play and beautiful to listen to. The calm beginning is my favorite part.

  • June 30, 2006 A piece that you will treasure.

I was one of the first to actually play this piece, as I was part of the Cabarrus All-County band, and I think that it is a beautiful piece. It has a beautiful, rich sound, and flowing, fluctuating dynamics. During the transition between the beginning and the middle, you...

can tell when it intensifies, because the music strengthens and speeds up. It is a piece that you will cherish, and will love to play.
