The best feature of this book is that features selections that are unique to this book. It is not a rehash of the same pieces found in every other collection. A student would need about two years of lessons to be ready for this book. Perhaps this book would make...

a good sequel to "The Joy of First Year Piano." All of the pieces are in original form, with responsible editing that preserves the stylistic practices of each period. Music from the 20th century is not included, however. The pages are clean and easy to read. There is enough material to last for about two years.

I was searching through self help piano method books at Sam Ash. A woman was next to me going through books. I asked her if she was a teacher and what she would recommed for a beginner with knowledge of music from another instrument (I play guitar). She pulled out...

the Joy of First Classics and she was absolutely right on. If you are a beginner but can read music even at a basic level (like the stuff you learned in junior highschool) this is the way to start. The arragements require left and right hand coordination from the start. You hear the harmonies very clearly. It has made me interested in theory. You are playing music not just rote drills and this makes you want to practice. And the pieces are far more attractive than the stuff in the self help method books. Highly recommended.
