“2016 Choral Contest Entry”

This new arrangement of The House of the Rising Sun is a new, bold arrangement for a cappella SATB choir with occasional divisi.  The melody of the ballad is very old, perhaps from the 1800's or earlier.  Some accounts put the origin of the tune in Olde England of the 1600's...of course this arrangement has words for America, particularly referring to New Orleans.

This arrangement is for students or adult mixed-voice choirs with an upper-level of singing experience.  There are numerous opportunities for singing dissonant notes. This song is well worth the effort to learn, singing off book or on.  Your audiences will be sure to love this old chestnut, especially memorable from "The Animals" singing group from the 1960's. This ballad of just over five minutes would fit nicely between two up-tunes in a choral concert or competition.
