As a young boy this was a favorite song, sung by a loved teacher who sang it with gusto, lots of english and delight to all of us kids!

  • Июль 23, 2008 Still good music after 60 years.

    J. Delos Jewkes sang this song for my enjoyment almost 60 years ago. I wanted something good for a bass/basso to sing for an audition for Music Man. Times and attitudes have changed somewhat so that the words would now be more disturbing for parents than they were then...

. But I still love the piece and the closing line for a bass.

  • Апрель 21, 2008 A fine and funny encore piece

The text reads like a fairy tale put into verse by Ogden Nash. I understand that John Charles Thomas, notable baritone of the last century, used it to great and entertaining effect, particularly by adding judicious rubato, here and there, slowing and speeding the performance. Effective performance demands clear and...

crisp articulation, and the performer's invitation to the audience by stance and delivery to enjoy the Gilbert and Sullivan-style high silliness.
