This has been a consistent favorite in my piano studio- you get a lot of wonderfully attractive sound for putting a little effort in teaching little ones a simple pattern to transpose in different chords. It is in the key of D minor (mostly natural minor), with just a few...

chords that outline E flat or A flat fifths, and is a perfect piece for introducing constant syncopated pedaling. It is a dark, mature stormy sound that rolls almost perpetually with only two rhythmic breaks. I can tell my students really like to hear themselves play this. Students wanting to play this need: a basic understanding of key signature, chords, intervals of a fourth and fifth. Promotes: pedaling, good opportunity to teach overall hand shape and quick register changes. Not much in the way of rhythmic difficulties here- only minor syncopation. Early intermediate or intermediate level.

This is a personal favorite of mine, which I play for my own enjoyment even though as a teacher I could play much more difficult music. The repeated patterns make an excellent teaching tool and make it easy to memorize for a recital. The sound is full and satisfying for...

teens, with just enough chromatic motion to add some challenge to learning it.
