  • July 15, 2009 Can we lighten up?

Unless I missed something, and there is a banner across the title in ink only the cool people can see reading "Learn to play repeatedly covered songs in the exact manner of your favorite artist," most of the criticisms seem to miss the point of this, and other such songbooks...

. I liked the book on two levels. First, it makes a number of frequently over-produced songs accessible to people who are not familiar with the genre, as well as people who are in the early learning of their instrument. Second, and, to my mind more important, giving people a basic form of a song encourages individual interpretation. It's what Johnny Cash, Sarah Carter, Pete Seeger, Jean Richie, and many more have called for time and again. We have enough cover bands playing all around the world. I would submit it is in the nature or the music that each person should play the song as they feel the song. To do this, what you need is a starting point. This book, and its ilk, give that starting point.

  • November 30, 2008 Great music to get started playing Guitar

I love the musical selection in this book, they are great songs to get started at playing popular music. However, you may, as I was, be dissapointed to figure out that the guitar music writen does not match what you will hear on your stereo. The easy arrangement is to...

write the melody of the music as the lead guitar line, not the what the actual guitarist plays on the album. It's a great way to build your playing skill while having fun and singing along, but if your looking to play like the artists it won't help you there.
