The riff was originally written on a Korg Polysix keyboard in 1981-1982 and stayed unknown until bassist John Levén suggested that Joey should make a song out of it. The lyrics for The Final Countdown were inspired by David Bowie: Space Oddity had similar synthesizer sounds too.
