In his preface, the author reminds the reader that this is not a book for the absolute beginner. Even the experienced player may not "get it" on first reading a given tune, but "You can expect to enjoy the process of learning... [and experience] the joy of recreating a traditional tune, of making it your own." This is the teacher/ student pact in effect throughout this marvelous book, written for the literary as much as the musical connoisseur. Although no classical violin experience is needed, you will need to know how to hold the fiddle and bow, and be able to play at least simple tunes in the first position. Having the ability to read music will enable you to follow the bowing patterns and left-hand techniques which the author feels are crucial in grasping the playing style.

Great for beginner of learning to read music. This is very good for beginner violin. The cd is great to hear the timing and work towards the timing. The book touches on several types of songs, slides, jigs and reels.

Agree with previous review. But suggest you order the Book/CD combination (available on this site). The CD recordings by Peter are very well done and useful for learning the tunes.

After listening to celtic music for several years, I finally picked up a fiddle with a determination to learn how to play. Being a very bookish sort of person, I purchased several beginners instructional books, including this one by Peter Cooper. This is the one I settled on as having...

the most interesting collection of tunes, along with the right blend of instruction, and I've been very happy with the choice. It has a separate CD that includes all of the music in the book, which, if you are a beginner is pretty much necessary to pick up on the rythm of many of the pieces. Well worth the time and money.
