I was given this book in 1967 while in the Novelles. It stayed with me my entire life but I still want to order a new one. A new approach to sing in taking a lot of emphasis off rigour practice (not say it's bad) and putting more emphasis...

on the psychological aspect of singing. "Let yourself sing" ... "A singer's emotions must lie close to the surface and easily sturred." I an a 59 year old man, a Beatle fan, and have been playing guitar and singing since ten ... this is the best book you will probably ever buy on singing. I got the 1938 (I think edition) and it is still around ? It must say something right. Ed

  • March 07, 2008 What a singer needs to know

My voice teacher has this book. After borrowing it, I ordered my own because I learned a great deal about how to sing from the text. Utilizing the vocal exercises during lessons and practice has been very useful in improving my tonal quality, vocal flexibility, and diction. It is an...

outstanding reference for serious vocal students looking to improve their singing and is highly recommended. That it is still in print after 50+ years is testament in itself of the work's value. It was just what I needed to enhance my vocal training. There are lot of full length vocal pieces in the last half of the book. A few are dated in my opinion, but many are timeless, classical vocal pieces worthy of addition to any vocal music library. I have sung in several choruses over the years, and am in my second year of serious vocal training. I currently sing 1st alto in a chorale that performs a classical choral repertoire including Brahms, Haydn, Handel, Beethoven and Lauridsen.
