  • May 25, 2013 Mostly in C concert

Almost all the transcriptions are in C concert, so you'll be fine if you're playing them on the piano. If you want to play these on the trumpet (maybe along with the recordings, or with your own jazz trio), you'll need to transpose many of these. Note...

that at least some of the transcriptions are for Bb trumpet, in particular songs where Chet started off singing, and then soloed on trumpet. The singing part is in C concert; the trumpet solo is in Bb and no transposition will be necessary. But this is a tremendous collection. The transcription of Cherokee is of tremendous value.

An excellent collection of Chet Baker transcriptions. The 'My Funny Valentine' recording reference in the Discography states 'Chet Baker Sings' on CD Blue Note 92932 or LP Pacific Jazz 1222. - 'this is not correct.' After some research, I finally discovered the transcription is from Gerry Mulligan - 'The Original Quartet With...

I believe that was Stan Ketz playing TENOR sax on this piece, not Gerry Mulligan.

I've spent many hours listening to and trying to figure out every beautiful note Chet played during this incredible live performance of his signature song with Gerry Mulligan and there it was, transcribed note for note. That alone was well worth the price. Thanks Chet, we miss you!
