The Cat and the Mouse

The Cat and the Mouse composed by Aaron Copland (1900-1990). Edited by Jane Magrath. For solo piano. Masterworks; Piano Solo; Solo. Alfred Masterworks Editions. Early Advanced level piece for the Piano Solo event with the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) Festivals Bulletin 2008-2009-2010. 20th Century. SMP Level 10 (Advanced); NFMC Level: Musically Advanced Class 1. Single piece. Standard notation and fingerings (does not include words to the songs). 7 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.16736).

ISBN 0739007947. With standard notation and fingerings (does not include words to the songs). 20th Century. 9x12 inches.

Aaron Copland's "Scherzo Humoristique," written in 1920, is indeed musically humorous as it depicts the skittering rodent and sinister feline in a demanding, but very enjoyable etude setting, using complex 1/16 note patterns, glissando, grace notes, chromatic scale work, and a generous use of the entire keyboard. There are sudden shifts in tempo and dynamics, and the performer tells a definite story, albeit without narration. Large hand reaches, sometimes 9ths, are required on some of the full block chords. A Federation Festivals 2014-2016 selection.
List/syllabus: Federation Festivals 2014-2016.

  • October 16, 2007 who knew piano could be such fun?

Alas, the pure fun and joy of playing this piece -- particularly if you are familiar with cats.

  • February 15, 2007 Very Fun!!!

This piece is a great break from classical themes such as mozart or beethoven. The glissandos are very fun and this piece is a great way to show off your virtuosity. It makes a great pair with pieces such as fantasie-impromptu. This piece is one of my favorite Copland...

pieces. One can really feel the cat and mouse running across the keyboard. When learning this piece, start out slow and then work in the dynamics and tempo. Good luck! this piece is well worth it.

  • March 07, 2005 Cat and Mouse - a work with a flair

About "The Cat and the Mouse" by Aaron Copland -- I absolutely love the way the audience (and myself, as well) can 'feel' what the music is saying. You can hear the cat and the mouse pouncing and scampering over the keyboard. This piece has so many openings to add your...

own personal touches to it. It is challenging but approachable, and perfect for the advancing piano student who prefers the more contemporary pieces. It is a rather long work (my copy is about six pages), but an exciting one.
