By one of Brazil's best new guitarists. A complete guide to playing guitar accompaniment and chord melodies in various Brazilian styles (Samba, Bossa Nova, Frevo, etc. ) Comes with a CD of Nelson demonstrating each exercise, plus a tune in each style. Many variations of basic comping patterns written out, each with complete chord voicings. Also includes short transcriptions of guitar parts as recorded by Toninho Horta, Joao Bosco, Joao Gilberto, etc. Leny Andrade - "When I think about Brasil, I think about "Violao" (that's what we call the nylon string guitar in our country). The art of playing "Violao" looks simple, but it isn't and this book shows how to assimilate and how to understand this art. This makes me feel happy. With talent and clear information, Nelson will help guitar players all around the world to enjoy all the pleasures of this wonderful instrument. Make good use of this excellent musical book!" Toninho Horta - "Nelson Faria was the right person to write this book, which contains examples and transcriptions of Brazil's greatest guitarists. This talented musician and dedicated music professor has a deep knowledge of Brazilian music and its rhythmic, melodic and harmonic subtleties." Joe Diorio - "Nelson Faria's book is a welcome addition to the guitar literature. I'm sure those who work with this volume will benefit greatly.".

    Sausalito, CA
    Difficulty Level:
  • August 19, 2011 Good resource book

I'm not sure that this is where is what to start your journey with Brazilian jazz/bosa nova guitar. This book is more for understanding the different rhythm patterms, that are used in Brazilian guitar music. If you are looking to some A.C. Jobim material, this is not...

what you are looking for. If you do however, what to work on different Sambas, Choros, Baiaos, and Bosa Novas, then this is just what you are looking for.

    Difficulty Level:
  • April 28, 2011 Terrific

This is a terrific. . . almost indispensable book for any serious player of the nylon string guitar (don't matter if you're jazz or classical). Great compilation of materials to help people get started with the Brazilian styles. Highly recommended.

    Difficulty Level:
  • April 28, 2009 FOR ADVANCED ONLY

What the other reviewers say about this book is misleading. If you are a very accomplished guitarist maybe you can make some sense out of it. The tempo on the CD is so fast one cannot even tell if it even correlates to the written music or not. Furthermore, while...

Bossa Nova is a fascinating art form these exercises are boring and an exercise in frustration. To call this play-a-long is a fraud unless one is at a level where you don't even need a book like this. In an area of guitar where there is a sad lack of enjoyable instruction books for the beginner/intermediate guitarist it is regretable that Prof. Faria could not have put something together comprehensible. For me it was a waste of time (the worst part) and money.

    Miami, FL
    Difficulty Level:
  • March 18, 2005 Great Book

This book is not without flaws, but I give it 5 stars because you should definately buy it if you are interested in Brazilian guitar. The highlights are the chord melody arrangements of Tristeza and Triste. I agree that the author should write another book or two to continue on...

these lessons. Some more arrangements would be nice.
