  • December 23, 2014 Useful addition to library

I use this book to provide more variety to my hymn playing during services. I find some of the arrangements too easy, but I suppose it is good to thin it out sometimes. I like the harmonizations , I find them more interesting than the Hal Hopson ones. The Rawsthorne ones...

are the best, but they can be a bit tricky if you're not a good sightreader. So this book would be a good teaching tool or set of reharms for more beginning organists. But it can also be useful to provide depth in a library of an advanced player, or more ideas for improving. One thing I do appreciate is that attention is paid so that there are no awkward page turns.

  • July 27, 2012 Brilliant, practical, engaging

I ordered both volumes, and I use these books every Sunday in a variety of ways: in addition to free accompaniments, there are many preludes, postludes, and interludes. I can play directly from the book, or use the material in combination with improvisation or other material. This is an excellent...

investment for any organist, intermediate to advanced.

  • December 17, 2009 Hymn Arrangements for Beginning Organists

This is a great resource for beginning church organists or those with limited skills. The pieces are exceptionally well written and range from 2 part voicing to more complex. It is meant as a graded guide to hymn playing. Most are arrangements of hymns but still could be used to...

accompany hymn singing. The solid feeling of 4 part hymns is kept. While there are a few gospel hymns, most of the hymn tunes chosen are traditional. The introduction has helpful hints for successful hymn playing. The pieces vary in difficulty from level 1 - level 4. Most are level 2 or 3. There are some prelude settings. The writing varies to include canons, chorales and ornamented style with the hymn tune in various voices. The setting of BUNESSAN (Morning Has Broken) is beautiful and the 2nd settings of NEW BRITAIN (Amazing Grace) is wonderful for beginners. Organ teachers will find this a useful resource for teaching hymn playing.

  • August 20, 2007 A Valuable Tool for Any Level

I have found The Art of Hymn Playing to be a very helpful volume. It contains 2 settings for most hymn tunes, many of which are easy enough to be played with no practice. There are some preludes that require a little work, but this book would be an invaluable...

    tool for any church organist.
