    I consider Alfred Burt to be one of the great American composers. A miniaturist of almost Chopin-level brilliance, his command of melody and his unusual (but somehow familiar) harmonies seem less the result of hard work than an act of borrowing from some timeless fact of nature. These carols...

    are the most successful American choral writing of the 20th century and their very existence is difficult to adequately explain. They seem to have been a once-in-a-millenium inspirational allowance, a sort of cosmic protest against the composer's early death.
