Most large audition calls for musical theatre, both professionally and in larger school situations, specify that those auditioning bring in a 16 bar excerpt. The professionals in musical theatre often complain that singers don't know how to construct an appropriate 16 bar audition, either in choosing a song or in editing an excerpt. With this new series, that problem is solved forever! Editor Michael Dansicker, a composer/producer/music director, is a seasoned musical theatre veteran, with 100 Broadway credits. He brings his expertise and broad knowledge of the literature to this series. Each excerpt has been given a thoughtful, graceful and effective form. No more illegible scribblings for the poor audition accompanist! An enormous variety of literature is represented, from old standards to movie songs to the latest Broadway and Off-Broadway material. With 100 songs per volume, any singing actor, whatever his or her talents and strong suits, will have many choices. In the preface, the editor gives valuable pointers on the nature of a good audition and some factors in choosing songs.

  • January 30, 2009 A Good Addition

This was a Christmas gift for my roomie, an aspiring actress. Her biggest stress has always been trying to find a piece and the perfect 16 bars to perform for auditions. The book itself is gorgeous, and the selections fit the criteria of belter nicely, with a good mix of...

solid alto and solid soprano choices. I felt like some of the song segments were a little weirdly chosen - for example, I think that one of the verses from "Holding Out For a Hero" might have been a better choice than just the chorus - but overall, the musical selections are sound. Overall, it's a pretty good book, and while I wouldn't recommend making this your performance bible, it's a good supplement with good options to choose from. One last quick note: if you're expecting to play and accompany yourself, you need to be a pretty skilled pianist. Although this book does have quite a few songs in C major/common time, it's also got it's share of difficult keys and time signatures to play with.

I loved this book because it not only gave me a bunch of good ideas for types of songs to sing at auditions but it picked out all the best parts for me to sing in 16 bars...very useful book.

This book was perfectly put together. It has all songs in my range ! no more looking through random musicals to find ones that fit. They also include the most powerful 16 bar cut that they can in this book .
