I purchased this score upon the recommendation of a professional composer that I had a lesson with. I've never been a fan of Steve Reich's music, but was drawn to this piece upon hearing a recording, particularly in regard to rhythmic phrasing. While changing meter for nearly every...

bar in order to suit the rhythms of speech is interesting, it is by no means new (Bartok, Messiaen). The vocal parts are identical copies of each other, each one a set number of eighth notes behind the previous (yeah, yeah, phasing, I get it). The harmony is very simple, so as not to force Reich to have to deal with the challenge of learning how to deal with it. I had friends in college who treat Reich like a god. This continues to elude me. I've heard commercial jingles that offer more demanding harmony and counterpoint.
