For piano. This fascinating collection draws on a virtually unknown set of Brazilian dances for piano published at the end of the nineteenth century in Rio de Janeiro. These pieces blend the melodic charm and grace of the European polka and other dance forms with the sparkle and syncopation of Afro-Caribbean styles. The result is a repertoire filled with verve and wit that will appeal to players and audiences alike.

These are called "Brazilian piano dances" in the intro, with differing designations such as "polka," "habanera," "polka tango," as well as just "tango." There are 21 pieces by 17 composers and generally require advanced ability due to rhythms and understanding of style. Most are two pages in length, not counting...

repeats. I own two other tango albums. One in the Alfred Masterworks series edited by Maurice Hinson has 20 pieces by 8 composers. Another is Phillip Keveren's arrangements of 15 Astor Piazzolla tangos. All are good with no duplication of pieces.
