This tango has been recorded several times in a variety of arrangements, including for clarinet and piano. In fact, in this publication the cello and violin parts diverge, highlighting the strengths and possibilities in each instrument. The left hand of the piano is very rhythmic throughout, embracing the percussive, syncopated character of the tango. The right hand sometimes supports the rhythm, sometimes the harmony, and sometimes the melody, and there is a section without the string instrument where the pianist shines. Somewhat jazzy; highly chromatic but never atonal.

An early version-a simple, haunting theme, a vigorous piano solo requiring a strong pianist, and a reprise of the first theme-is found on the album, Memento Bittersweet-all music composed by composers with HIV/AIDS. When I contacted Mr. Hersch to obtain the music, he wanted to add...

more to the cello part before releasing it, and he wrote a much more complex section following the piano solo. The music is challenging but not overwhelming and brings forth all the emotions in a tango. I find many of the suggested bowings to be quite awkward, however. Overall, very well suited to the cello and very satisfying to play.
