Dvorak's string quartets are works which demand an extremely broad range of colours and textures from string players. One could say that these pieces attempt to achieve "orchestral" textures in a string quartet setting. By transferring this music to a larger palette, a full orchestra with winds, brass and percussion, the music sonically expands in a way which is not possible in a string quartet.  The Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 51, calls upon traditional forms of song and dance in Eastern Europe, including the polka, dumka and other Czech dances. Indeed, it is in many ways similar to Dvorak's famous Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, which were written just a year earlier. This arrangement of the Op. 51 Quartet is the first in a series of Dvorak's chamber music pieces which Mr. Beer plans on arranging for full orchestra.
