Few shows in recent years have drawn such unanimous praise from the London critics as Sweet Charity which opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre, on October 11, 1967, to a chorus of loud Hoorays. "Irresistible," said the Daily Express. "A triumph," said the Sun. "Everybody by everybody had a whale of a time," said the Daily Sketch. The story is a simple one and stems from an Oscar-winning Italian film, The Nights of Cabiria, directed by Federico Felini. In the musical version, the heroine is Charity Hope Valentine, a New York dance-hall hostess, played in the London production with consummate talent, inimitable charm and unflagging energy by Juliet Prowse.
