Having sung Barber's setting of this poem for years, I didn't think any other version could be as moving...I was wrong. Lauridsen's treatment of the poem is gorgeous. The harmonies and vocal range are not difficult, but the piece requires very sensitive phrasing and a rich...

tonal quality... not suitable for non-auditioned choirs.

  • March 04, 2009 A challenging, yet rewarding piece

This is one of Morten Lauridsen's most beautiful nocturnes. My choir has found it quite challenging, requiring good interaction between parts and some real legato tone from the tenors and basses. The constant time changes and rubato mean that the music virtually needs to be memorised, but extremely rewarding...

    to sing.

It's an observation that a fair amount of Lauridsen's music is often instantly recognisable as being his and that it could be viewed as being rather 'samey'. This short piece, though, is an absolute little diamond and you simply ignore the fact that parts of it may sound...

familiar from other choral pieces by the composer. It could be argued that the ending is a little drawn out but the flow of the work and, in particular, the peak around two-thirds the way through easily make up for it. It's one of those few pieces that made me say "I really like that" after the first rehearsal. If you're going to perform it then rehearse it well and really work on the dynamics and atmosphere you create. The piece deserves it.

  • September 27, 2008 A stunning piece

I'm performing this for my high school's Chamber choir and it's absolutely amazing. The chords in this song are astounding. Lauridsen uses dissonance, dynamics, and tempo perfectly to create such a passionate, romantic song. I'm "Sure On This Shining Night" that you will enjoy this piece...

    as well. :)

  • February 12, 2008 a rewarding choral piece for the repertoire

My choir (C40 - 45 SATB)is really enjoying the challenge of this piece. It is our second piece of Morten Lauridsen and we are unanimous in our appreciation of his beautiful settings. He always writes interesting parts for each voice.
