    whether or not vaughan williams 'knew' or played the viola this piece sits very easily under the fingers and has many of the vw trademarks (think lark ascending) . I have only recently got it and have not had a chance to play yet with piano but it would suit someone...

    who is quite fluent in the viola and wants a a challenge of post classical piece not as challenging as , say, the late brahms sonatas

    Williams remaked to a friend in 1933: "My viola suite is not finished - I do not know if it ever will be." Truly this is a piece worthy to explored, and vioists deserve to be utterly absorbed as they chart their path through this fantastic musical wonderland. The Royal Conservatory of Music rates this repertoire at the Grade 10 level.
