Suite Antique - for Flute and Piano (Originally for Flute, Harpsichord and Strings). Composed by John Rutter (1945-). For flute and piano accompaniment. Flute. 20th Century. Difficulty: difficult. Instrumental solo book and piano reduction. Composed 1979. 41 pages. Duration 17'. Published by Oxford University Press (OU.9780193586918).

ISBN 9780193586918. 20th Century. 9x12 inches.

For flute, harpsichord, and strings or flute and piano The instrumentation is the same as Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.5. The Suite is made up of six movements ranging from `a Bach-like Aria' to a 'Richard Rodgers-style Waltz'. Rutter's own style comes forth most strongly in the final Rondeau with its characteristically forward-driving rhythms and beautiful melodic lines. Evoking an 'antique' spirit, each movement is based on a Baroque or Classical style. Full scores and parts are available on hire from the publisher.

  • October 30, 2012 This is a WOW solo!

My private teacher suggested this piece for one of my solos, and I love it! It's just easy enough to be fun to learn and listen to, but it's also difficult enough to push me to be a better flutist. I found some of the movements in Suite...

Antique to be fairly easy, which provided a counter to the more challenging movements. My accompanist and I love it for its flowing melodies and its familiar quality. The best thing was that I received the music within three business days, even though I was told it would take up to twenty!

  • July 29, 2012 Tuneful and likable

A real audience pleaser with lots of pretty melodies. A good piece for developing a singing tone and introducing polymeters. Loosely based on a Baroque dance suite with modern touches, as in the waltz.

  • February 13, 2012 Suite Antique for flute and Piano

I heard this on our local PBS station and loved the flute parts so I ordered it. I am in the process of learning the parts, particularly the odd-numbered movements (for some reason I like those best). I plan on using these in Church programs as either a prelude...

    or offeratory.

  • July 24, 2008 Beautiful to hear and fun to play!

I first heard just the Prelude of "Suite Antique" by John Rutter played in The Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames, Iowa. I was so swept off of my seat that I immediately ordered it to play myself. It arrived as I arrived home from Iowa. I am looking forward to...

playing parts of it with a former piano student as she plays flute.

  • June 17, 2008 Execellent Piece

This piece is very enjoyable to play and it offers several varieties in style. It has slow, lyrical movements, and fast, dancelike movements as well as some jazz and an aria movement. I look forward to practicing when I play this piece.
