Our first violinist in the Giovanni Quartet discovered this work in a recording, and brought it to our attention. It's a lovely piece in slow-fast-slow format to be played straight through. The opening is a somber adagio in minor, ending with a mini-candenza for each of...

the four players in turn. Then after a short cello introduction in the allegro, the viola states the main, singing theme. Some interesting development brings the group into C# Major in one of the more difficult passages in the piece. After this settles down and gets back into the original key, the viola ends the Allegro section with a plaintive sustained note. The piece concludes with the minor Andante again.
