We have now come full circle – this edition concludes our Urtext series of the complete Beethoven string quartets. The ending of this highly expressive work, at whose centre is the famous “Cavatina,” was originally the “Grand Fugue.” Yet a contemporary critic felt that this was “unintelligible, like Chinese.” At the urging of the publisher Beethoven replaced it with a newly composed finale and published the “Grand Fugue” with a new opus number. Ever since, it has often been performed separately. In order to respect the desire of modern ensembles to be able to perform the Quartet op. 130 in Beethoven's original version, we have included the “Grand Fugue” in this edition.

The Henle Editions of the Beethoven quartets are now completely published, Opus 130 (with the Grosse Fuge) being the last of the individually published late quartets to appear. As with the previous Henle editions, this is a pleasure to work with, the page turns are carefully located in the parts...

, and the scholarly editorial work in the score is exceptionally useful.

  • February 15, 2008 Last of Henle's Late Beethoven String Quartets

A wonderful printed rendition of one the great chamber works. Some of the reasons I like these Henle Editions: large notes with plenty of space around the staff lines and notes, measure numbers, and the research. For instance, there is a discussion in the preface of the substitution of the...

Grosse Fuge, Op.133, for the subsequently composed finale. Beethoven had much more involvement in the publication of the Fugue as a separate opus than I had realized. This is the last in the Henle editions published of the great Beethoven Late Quartets. It was worth the wait.
