Have you, too, often listened to Grappelli's solos thinking "I wish I could do that, but it is way over my head?" Here is the answer. Simple theory, licks and stylistic lessons point you towards your first authentic Gypsy Jazz improvisations, which you can try out with the swinging guitar-bass playalong CD rhythm section. Then prepare to tackle six classic Stephane Grappelli solos, annotated and analyzed for your understanding. To grasp the finesses of sound and timing, there are many sample licks and solos by Tim Kliphuis on the CD as well. It is assumed the student reads music and has a basic command of the instrument. • February 14, 2013 A Great Resource

Mr. Kliphuis has done a great service to those who would understand and emulate the style of the brilliant violinist Stephane Grappelli (whom I was privileged to see perform live in Greenwich Village in the late '80s). He analyzes the harmonies and technical feats of Grappelli in a most accessible...

fashion, providing examples for the reader/player that will help him/her play in Grappelli's style. I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity of the book's writing, and I wound up sitting for far longer sessions of playing the examples than I had expected.
