This is an excellent, little-known work with a much different take on the "Stabat Mater" theme. this type. You will need good, pretty hefty soprano, tenor, and bass soloists, especially if you do this with orchestra. One caveat: The choral parts in the orchestral score are in the old clefs. There are two long fugues that you may shorten with optional cuts in the score. While competent, Schubert was always better writing lyrical melodies.

  • May 01, 2007 Stabat Mater - good for Passiontide

Stabat Mater is classic Schubert with lush harmonies and lyrical lines. This is great music for Passiontide or a Tenebrae service. Using the German is the optimal way to perform this music. I have used it in the past and was pleased with the outcome.
