Songs without Words (Complete)

Songs without Words (Complete) composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Edited by Maurice Hinson. For solo piano. Masterworks; Piano Collection. Alfred Masterwork Edition. Classical Period. SMP Level 9 (Advanced). Collection. Standard notation, fingerings and introductory text (does not include words to the songs). 192 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.4860C).

ISBN 0739020897. With standard notation, fingerings and introductory text (does not include words to the songs). Classical Period. 9x12 inches.

These 48 pieces were composed over a period of two decades, beginning in 1832, and published in eight groups of six each. Many of these songs were dedicated to the women in Mendelssohn's life and reflect the sunniest qualities of his melodiousness, spontaneity and invention. Maurice Hinson has skillfully researched and edited these works back to their original form and provides a very informative introduction, which includes many detailed suggestions for a stylistic interpretation and performance, as well as biographical information on the composer's life.

This title has selections that range in difficulty from SMP Level 7-9.

  • March 12, 2009 Readable notes!

This edition is very readable. The notes are probably the most clear of any edition I've seen. This collection is filled with songs of various moods, including some perfect for wedding preludes and receptions.

  • August 16, 2008 A nice edition

This is a very good (complete!) edition of Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words - Alfred is definitely a name that I trust. All the notes that were added by the editor rather than Mendelssohn are indicated as such. There are also notes about what Mendelssohn himself wrote in the music. The...

edition is also very conveniently comb bound. The Mendelssohn Songs Without Words are an essential addition to the pianists library, and this edition fills the requirement very nicely.

  • June 20, 2008 notation errors

I played through a few of the pieces and discovered what I believe are a few wrong notes. I am a pianist with a doctorate in music. The book was a gift for a student, so I no longer have it, or I would specify what I believe to be...

This is a great anthology that contains Mendelssohn's best known works. I think that any one will enjoy the background info. and the pieces themselves that are presented in this album.
