Back in 1993 my choir director, Jay Harztler, of Eastern Mennonite High School taught us this beautiful song. We loved the harmonies and the way the song pulled us between different moods. When he told us the story behind the song, singing this piece grew into a meditation. I often...

I too had the wonderful privledge to sing this song under the direction of Mr. Grotenhuis in the Nebraska All-State Chorus. I remember his wife came in to one of our rehersals and was brought to tears. This song is so powerful and moving. I still find myself humming...

  • December 29, 2008 From Dale Grotenhuis' son

You are correct in that dad composed this after the death of my older brother. Dad doesn't even remember the composition process. All I remember after son Jack's death was dad walking around in a daze and helpless to do anything and my mom yelling at him to...

get out of the house and not come back until he had written something. Out of that came Song of Triumph. All your kind comments about the piece are appreciated beyond words. Thank you.

This is one of the most beautiful anthems I have ever sung. It is very "Russian" in feeling. I was told he composed it after the loss of his son in a tragic accident.
