  • March 15, 2008 Great piece but difficult to read this edition

The Durand edition has very small and faded print, it is hard to read from this edition. The Dover edition is a much nicer edition--there is a misprint after the first ending (wrong clef)but the fingerings and larger size notes are easier for reading and playing.

  • March 13, 2008 Good Edition

This is the original edition, it should be trusted. The music is not bunched together. There just happen to be a lot of 32nd and 16th notes.

  • January 18, 2004 Ravel's Sonatine:A timeless "neoclassic"

Ravel's Sonatine is a neo-classic masterpiece which contrasts sharply from some of Ravel's other, more well-known gems for piano such as: Gaspard de la nuit, and Valses Nobles et Sentimentales. As musically demanding as it is technically this piece requires much practice-time and should only...

be studied by advanced students since the technical demands could be crippling to an unexperienced student, and a high-level of musicality is necessary to make this piece a joy to play, and especially, for others to hear. The Sonatine is one of Ravel's most personal, intimate, beautiful compositions for piano, and is a ruler by which neo-classic pieces should be measured. A great recording to hear of this piece being played is one by Martha Argerich on the Deutsche Grammophone label, and Geiseking's aren't bad. For a musical and technical challenge which will certainly repay the player a hundred-fold for a just interpretation, the Sonatine is a must for any serious student of the piano.
