The Urtext at first seemed not too different from the original 1894 publication by N. Simrock, Berlin. But, there are significant bowing and fingering changes that change how the music sounds when the Urtext is used, which I found more difficult than the N. Simrock edition. Although I like having...

Urtext editions, and generally prefer them to other publications of the same piece, I prefer the N. Simrock version to this Urtext. Dvorak's children were obviously intermediate/advanced players if they were able to play this piece at ages 10 and 15, son-violin and daughter-piano, respectively. A careful listening will help you hear the pentatonic scales and syncopated rhythms of the Indian melodies and Negro spirituals Dvorak had heard in the U.S., which partially inspired the composition. Understanding and noting these things added to my enjoyment of playing this piece. I will be performing the piece at a family gathering in June 2009 with my older brother.

I have enjoyed playing this seemingly easy piece. It's inflections are so intricate that it was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

  • January 28, 2004 clean and interesting edition

The usual top-notch Henle quality. The editing of the violin part is brilliant, with fingerings the way a pro would play it. (If these annoy you there's also a Wiener Urtext edition, but I like them.)
