    New York, NY
    Difficulty Level:
  • November 15, 2008 Many changes are made for viola

This edition IS the supposed "viola edition" of the pieces. Compared to the clarinet edition, there are many octave transpositions and other similar edits. Although some people might like the pieces as this edition portrays them, others might not, which is expected. But, in other Urtext editions, I'm used...

to seeing ossia parts for suggestions the composer might have had, and those were absent here. In short, buy this edition if you want to play the piece as Brahms "supposedly" intended. If you want the piece to sound less awkward, you will have to edit the part yourself or purchase another edition. That being said, the edition itself looks beautiful, on high quality paper and with good space between the staves.

    Morehead, KY
    Difficulty Level:
  • February 02, 2008 Excellent Scholarly Edition

This edition is supposed to be accurate to what Brahms originally wrote, and is designed to be free from any errors. It is also made on high quality paper. This edition contains both Sonatas 1 and 2, which is nice because one doesn't have to buy them separately. A...

caution: be careful that you order the right edition. a family member of mine actually placed my order and a accidentally ordered the viola edition (I returned it and bought the clarinet addition). The clarinet and viola editions look very similar, so make sure you are ordering the right one
