Sonata in D Major (Op. K 96) is an arrangement of one of the most cheerful and tuneful keyboard sonatas by the late baroque composer, Domenico Scarlatti. Many consider him the “father of the modern pianoforte” style of composition as he composed over 500 sonatas for harpsichord and early pianofortes. This arrangement was created for the Dallas Camerata Woodwind Quintet an ensemble of professional performers but can be played by good high school performers. If an advanced oboist is not available the part can be performed on flute. Ranges and techniques are limited and a few passages are arranged in overlapping style to limit the technical demands on the players. Scarlatti’s sonatas are composed in a binary form with repeat markings for the first section and closing sections. But, to limit the demands on the “chops” of the woodwind players I suggest performing the piece straight through without repeats making it about three minutes in length. I hope you and your audiences enjoy this exciting and attractive musical composition. .
