  • July 19, 2012 Great to have Glass on my keyboard

A great discovery! I have heard many recordings of Philip Glass but I think the first was the soundtrack of "Koyaanisqatsi - Life Out of Balance" on PBS television which knocked me out many years ago. (I am an amateur pianist in my 70s.) This collection for piano puts the Glass...

sound under my fingers on my own keyboard, and I am delighted with it! It requires close attention but is not difficult if you can sight read easy Mozart or Haydn. The slow changes in extended repetitions now remind me of the passages in Vivaldi and his contemporaries which also build on the "figure/ground" theme. If you love classical music, jazz, or rock you will like playing this album.

These pieces are really great for learning piano. Metamorphisis1-5 is a steady increase in difficulty. The pieces are very easy to count to for timing. One problem is the binding of the book causes it to close while playing. These songs make use of the full piano range, so...

you can't play them on a 61 key keyboard.

  • April 29, 2009 Minimalist Metamorphoses

I bought this shortly after hearing "Mad Rush" for the first time, and once I had mastered the additive rhythm that Glass loves so much (mostly 2 in the left hand against 3 in the right), I was able to learn the pieces very quickly. The music is clear, with...

plenty of uncluttered notes on each page and no ambiguity of rhythm or performance technique. Due to the nature of the music I did not find it necessary to have it in front of me for performance purposes. I recommended it for people just getting curious about polyrhythms as well as Glass and minimalist music fans.
