This is a wonderful format – on most pieces the piano can play the Christmas carols alone or add the optional instrument descants. The pieces are in Jazz style with some more effective than others. The ones I would actually use from this book are: “It came upon a Midnight Clear...

with flute and bass and “Away in a Manger with flute. These are both in a smooth jazz style. Others use 2 “C instruments, hand-chimes, violin, Bb clarinet, oboe, recorder, and cello and are in various styles with varying degrees of effectiveness. Some such as the “Ave Maria have only the piano accompaniment for the piano part and cannot stand alone from the instrumental which has the melody. Again this is a great idea for church musicians using limited resources. I hope they publish more books such as this using general hymns
