Gaelic songs are beautiful to listen to and to sing, but until now it has been extremely difficult for anyone without knowledge of the Irish language (Gaelic) to sing the songs of that tradition. A must for anyone who has always longed to sing the old songs of Ireland, this book and CD decodes the Irish language for those who aspire to sing these songs without them having to undertake an Irish language course. The fourteen songs are presented in an accessible fashion. On the CD, the author speaks each phrase slowly, leaving a pause for the student to imitate the pronunciation. The author then sings each song in a simple, plain style, conducive to learning. The book has the sheet music, guitar chords, phonetics, Irish lyrics, and a translation and background to each song. There is an introduction which gives information on traditional singing in Irish as well as a guide to the phonetic system used. The songs are graded linguistically and musically so that the student can build up skills as she or he progresses through the book.

  • December 18, 2007 Learn Irish Gaelic Fast

This is an excellent collection of songs in Irish Gaelic, and a quick and fun way to learn to speak and sing the language with correct pronunciation. The CD Rom provides the verses spoken syllable by syllable then a sung performance, and the music book gives an explanation on pronunciation...

, the lyrics, a translation, and the melody and chord changes for each song. These can easily be turned into an accompiment by a good pianist or guitarist. An excellent book for a beginner or for more advanced groups who can easily adapt and harmonise the melodies. Note: The disc is a CD Rom, and not a regular compact disc, as mentioned in the book, so a computer is needed to play it. This is altogether an unparalleled success, and the only book of its kind on the market.

  • April 16, 2007 For those who don't know Irish, this is fantastic!

While I don't adore all the songs included in the songbook/on the CD, I very much like how it is set up. Not knowing any Irish, I find this very easy to follow, and the options on the CD are exactly what someone needs to learn the music...

. It also provides an excellent set of references for people who want to learn Irish, and I've looked into some of them. Get this book if you need an Irish song and you haven't mastered any of the language!.

  • November 04, 2004 This is FABULOUS!

This book and CD is just what I've been looking for. The songs are ones I've been wanting to learn, and the combination of phonetic lyrics, spoken lyrics, and sung lyrics ensures that anyone can learn to sing these songs. When I sing these songs in public people...

always tell me how impressed they are that I made the effort to learn the gaelic lyrics - if only they knew how easy this book made it!
