Simply Spirituals features six Unison/Two-part songs that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the traditional spiritual. An outstanding resource for children's and youth choirs both in churches and schools, this collection also provides an indispensable resource for small adult choirs and senior choirs. Spanning the entire year, "Simply Spirituals" includes titles for fall, winter, and spring concerts and for church applications such as All Saints' Day, Ascension, Christ the King, Christian Discipleship, Christmas/Epiphany, Eastertide, Lent, and Pentecost. The optional vocal parts may be performed by C instrument or synthesizer. As an added bonus, the collection includes reproducible song sheets, featuring both melody and lyrics, and a fully orchestrated Performance/Accompaniment CD is also available.

These "Six Easy Unison or Two-part Spirituals with Reproducible Song Sheets" by Ruth Elaine Schram are a valuable source for young people's choirs, although they will appeal to any age. Having just performed the first of the collection "I'm Gonna Sing when the Spirit Says Sing" with...

a small group of 7 to 9 year olds at a Pentecoste service after three short rehearsals I can confirm that they work very well in unison throughout although adding the descant/second part in the later stages of each song would add to the fun. The piano part is excellently arranged in a jazzy but non-fussy idiom and the collection is attractively produced. A link to the relevant church festivities is given on the Contents page: 3 are for quite general use, two are Christmassy and suggestions for "I Ain't Gonna Grieve" cover 6 occasions in the year. My British middle-class children love singing "I'm gonna" and "I wanna".
